High Tea in the Garden : Inspired by Camellias - Dianne Hall

Hardback.   Very good condition.   2007

If you love camellias, antique china and good things to eat, this book will delight.  The link between camellias and high tea is strong, as tea is specie of camellia and ornamental camellias voyaged from China to gardens around the world via tea clippers.

The author runs Newmans Nursery at Tea Tree Gully, and started the Topiary Cafe in the 1980s.  The recipes and hints are interspersed with full page colour plates of cakes, colourful crockery and camellias.  This book does not offer technical advice on growing camellias, but aims to show off the beauty of these winter flowering shrubs, relatives of which are also responsible for the tea we drink.

Quirky quotes from diverse sources such as Eliza Acron and William Wordsworth are scattered throughout and historical and cultural notes on the many different varieties of camellias make for interesting reading while waiting for your chosen cake to cook.  This pretty book would delight anyone with even a passing interest in flowers and cooking.
