Originally a lawyer, Richards began his successful cooking career in Ōtautahi in the 1980s, when he bought the downtown restaurant Casa Del Sol and started the White Tie restaurant.

In the 1990s it was called Michael’s Restaurant and a cooking school was added upstairs.  
He then created a festival, wrote a cookbook and taught all over the world.  Michael died in 2022 aged 66.
